The sky refence inspiration was discarded after
two paintings in favor of the two contrasting areas of pigment
that they were largely about. I pursued finding shapes that paralleled
or angled off from the edge of the canvas, allowing the "figure"
shape to be heavily & roughly impasto (sand, sawdust mixed
in) & the "ground" shape to be a smoother contrasting
texture, sometimes of a related or harmonious color, sometimes
more jarring and abrubt. This installation is from my first one-artist
exhibition, at the Atlanta Artworkers Coalition Gallery (AAWC),
1982.
