back next Coffee House Napkin Drawing © 1978 Tom Ferguson
collection Chase-Manhattan Bank (capitalism has some redeeming qualities)
As the title implies, the image came
from a doodle on a napkin in a greasy spoon which I was wont to
stop in for coffee. This was prior to the more upscale coffee
houses which were just waiting for me. The paint is no longer
confined to two contrasting shapes, or figure/ground. Notice the
two 'scratches', done with a fishbone brought back from a fishing
trip spouse Cyndia made. This seemed to me to fit, a kind of primal
surface marked by a primal creature.
