High Museum curator Peter Morrin noticed my work in 1982 when I
exhibited at AAWC (the Atlanta Art Worker's Coalition) Gallery &
the ACA (Atlanta College of Art) Gallery. He wrote something for Art
Papers including two paintings and also wrote, at my request, a
statement for a brochure accompanying the 7 Museum touring
Retrospective I organized in 1984. I'm not aware of any politics (i'd
be no good at it anyway) so being singled out for a High Museum
exhibit must have been based on Peter's connection to the work.
This exhibit gave me the credibility to approach SEECA in
Winston-Salem, CAC in New Orleans and other venues. It was a great bump
for the old career and, as it turns out, the highlight. A few times I
had the fun of standing where I could observe people passing through.
Responses ranged from visitors strolling by with barely a glance to
stopping, stepping closer for prolonged study and animated
discussion with a companion. I laid out the 30 heads (27 x 23") on the
floor and via many trips up & down a stepladder, arrived at this
arrangement. There were three of us in this wing... Amy Landesberg and
Don Cooper.
