Paul Klee stood out for me at this time and I learned of his long suffering and eventual death
in 1940. At least he missed most of the war though he was living in Switzerland, having fled - been
booted out of - Germany. I saw a show in NY of Klee, in the late 70s, which disappointed me. Then he was re-annointed
St. Klee for me when I ran across a large, multi-volume book documenting his entire production at Emory University.
I don't think I've ever used the word
sublime to describe art but now I have.
